うなぎのかぎ賃
The payment for eel
けちんぼうな男がおりました
There was a man who was very mean.
毎日毎日ご飯どきになると、うなぎ屋の前へ出かけて行っては、腹いっぱいにうなぎのにおいを吸い込み、

そのまま家へ飛んで帰って、うなぎのにおいでご飯を食べるのでした

うなぎ屋がすましていうと、
The owner said.
男は仕方なく、ふところから八百文取り出しました。

と、ニコニコ顔のうなぎ屋がうけとろうとしたところ、男はそれを板の間へほうりだしました。

お金が、景気のいい音をたてると、男はうなぎ屋にいいました。
When the money made a good sound, the man said to the owner.
「においの代金は、音ではらおう。それ、銭の音をきいただろう。ほんとうに銭をうけとったつもりで、帰んな」
"The fee for the smell is the sound. You've heard the sound of money falling, haven't you. Then get the money and leave."
この勝負、うなぎ屋の負けでございます。
This round, the owner was the loser.
