A tiger on the folding screen
むかしむかし、一休さんと言う、とんちで評判の小僧さんがいました。
Once upon a time, there was a little monk named Ikkyu. He was renown for his quick wit.
一休さんのとんちの評判を聞いて、殿さまがお城に一休さんを招き入れました
One Lord heard about Ikkyu's talent, so one day, he summoned the little monk to his castle.
さっそくじゃが、そこにあるびょうぶのトラをしばりあげてくれぬか。
"Overthere, can you tie up the tiger on the folding screen for me?
夜中にびょうぶから抜け出して悪い事ばかりするので、ほとほと困っておったのじゃ
Since I have bought this masterpiece, bad things happen in the middle of the night." The Lord said.
もちろん、びょうぶに描かれた絵のトラが出てくるなんて、うそに決まっています。
Of course, the Lord was telling a lie. It was just a tiger drawn on the folding screen, it couldn't come out.
しかし有名な絵描きが描いたのでしょうか、
But, did a famous painter draw it?
びょうぶに描かれたトラはキバをむいて、今にも襲いかかってきそうでした。
The tiger drawn on the folding screen looked like snarling and attacking everyone.
本当に、すごいトラですね。　それでは、しばりあげてごらんにいれます。
"What a great tiger, I will tie it up for you.
なわを、用意してください
Please give me a rope." Ikkyu said.
おおっ、やってくれるか
"Oh, can you do it?"
はい。もちろんですとも
"Yes, of course."
一休さんはそう言うと、ねじりはちまきをして腕まくりをしました。
Ikkyu said and rolled up his sleeves and tied a twisted towel around his head.
そして家来が持ってきたなわを受け取ると、一休さんは殿さまに頼みました。
And when the servants brought the rope, he asked the Lord for onething.
それでは、トラをびょうぶから追い出してください
"Mister, please make the tiger come out of the folding screen.
すぐに、しばってごらんにいれます
When it comes out, I will tie it up."
それを聞いた殿さまは、思わず言いました。
Hearing that, the Lord completely forgot his scheme and babbled.
何を言うか！　びょうぶに描かれたトラを、追い出せるわけがなかろうが
"What do you mean boy? This tiger is drawn on this screen! How can I make it cone out?"
すると一休さんは、にっこり笑って言いました
Ikkyu-san only smiled and answered.
それでは、びょうぶからはトラは出て来ないのですね
"As you have said, the tiger on the screen can't come out, right?
それを聞いて、安心しました。　いくらわたしでも、出てこないトラをしばる事は出来ませんからね
I'm relieved to hear that. No matter how hard I try, I can not stop the tiger that does not come out."
それを聞いて、殿さまは思わず手を叩きました。
The Lord stood stricken then, he suddenly burst out laughing.
あっぱれ！　あっぱれなとんちじゃ！
"Good, goog, you're such a smart boy.
ほうびをつかわすから、また来るがよいぞ
"Here is your reward, come here again next time, ok?"
こうして一休さんはたくさんのほうびをもらって、満足そうにお寺に帰りました
After that, Ikkyu returned to his temple, a bag full of gold in his satchel.
