The population of Hakuba Village is approximately 8,000 people, but it gets very crowded in winter.
As a result, work at the village office becomes very busy.
Recently, there has been a problem with the furigana (pronunciation) of foreign names.
There are many ways to read foreign names.
For example, the name "Charles" may be pronounced as "Charles" by some people, but differently by others.
The person at the office asks the person how to pronounce their name and tells them to correct it if it is different from the previous registration.
The reason for this problem is that the furigana is not written on the foreigner's residence card.
Residence cards are important identification documents, but sometimes you don't know how to read your name.
In 2024, approximately 2.71 million tourists came to Hakuba Village.
About 450,000 of them were foreigners.
The village office processed residence procedures for approximately 1,500 people.
During busy times, it may take up to a week for the procedure to be completed.
For this reason, Hakuba Village asked the government to write furigana on the residence card.
