Goodbye, Eggplant, and the Swamp God
Long ago, there was a village with a bottomless swamp near what is now Tokyo.
The villagers lived quietly.
One day, the ground shook loudly and it rained a lot.
The villagers' fields were destroyed and the fish in the swamp died.
After this, the sound of the ground and the rain continued many times.
The villagers were scared
One day, a traveling monk came and said, ``The water god is angry.''
The villagers decided to put the young woman in the swamp so as not to anger the god.
There was a young woman named Osayo in the village.
Osayo had no family and was growing eggplants in the field.
The villagers went to Sayono's field.
Then the ground shook again and it started to rain heavily.
The swamp water came and swallowed Osayo.
And the swamp became quiet
When the villagers were relieved, a morning wave came flowing by.
When the villagers were surprised, the swamp god appeared.
God said, ``When I was suffering from illness, I ate a goodbye eggplant and became well.''
From now on, I will do my best for the village."
The villagers were happy.
Then they built a shrine to worship the god.
I decided to always give eggplants at festivals.
