A priest who eats a lot
There was a temple called Taijoan near the sea in Shizuoka Prefecture.
There was a monk who ate a lot.
Fishermen caught fish from the sea and brought them onto their boats.
The fishermen had a very hard job, but they didn't get paid much.
The monk said to the boat owner, ``Please pay the fishermen more money.''
The owner of the ship said, "Eat rice cake with my brother, and if you win, you can think about it."
The priest won by eating more mochi than the boat owner's brother.
But the ship's owner said, "I'm just thinking about it, I'm not making any promises."
The owner of the boat said, ``If I go to Edo and the priest comes with me without eating, I will make it easier for the fishermen to work.''
The priest went all the way to Edo without eating for 7 days.
And I ate a very expensive dish for 50 people in Edo.
The boat owner also bought souvenirs for the fishermen.
The monk returned to the village and the fishermen were able to work more easily.
